Vestibular Physical Therapy

Vestibular physical therapy, also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), is a specialized branch of physical therapy that focuses on the evaluation and treatment of vestibular system disorders. The vestibular system is responsible for maintaining balance, spatial orientation, and coordinating eye movements.

Vestibular disorders and concussions can result in symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo (a spinning sensation), unsteadiness, and problems with balance and coordination. These conditions can significantly impact a person’s daily activities and overall quality of life. Vestibular physical therapy aims to reduce these symptoms and improve functional abilities.

During an initial evaluation, a vestibular physical therapist assesses the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and performs various tests to determine the underlying cause of the vestibular dysfunction. These tests may include eye movement evaluations, balance assessments, and positional tests.

Based on the assessment findings, a customized treatment plan is developed. Vestibular physical therapy employs a combination of exercises and techniques to target specific vestibular deficits and improve overall balance and stability.
